Aromatic oils, essential oils and other odors - harmless to health and environmentally friendly
It is worth knowing that in the home fragrance industry the concept of "natural" is becoming increasingly important these days. This means that consumers are no longer buying products simply because of their shared use: buyers are increasingly looking for added value and products that are harmless to their health and environmentally friendly.
However, in order to understand the difference between synthetic fragrances and natural fragrances, one must first understand how different types of fragrance are produced: aromatic oils, essential oils and natural oils.Odor production: the main types of odors used by perfumers
It is no secret that all odors come from nature. Natural oils can be extracted from a variety of fruits, seeds, herbs and spices, and later they are transformed into three types of raw materials, from which the odors used today in many recognizable and in the production of candles, cosmetics, etc. are made.
It is useful to know that all fragrance raw materials consist of the same three main elements: carbon, hydrogen and oxygen, only arranged in different ways. Knowing this, scientists were able to easily repeat the natural odors of essential oils, creating what they call "identical compounds of nature". This allows masters perfumers to have more raw materials, creating special, unique fragrances of their own. At the same time, the possibility of creating fragrances at lower cost has also emerged.Currently, three main types of odors (raw materials) used in perfumes are distinguished:
- Essential oils;
- Natural oils (there are two types): identical natural fragrances (natural oils) and naturally extracted fragrances;
- Man-made aromatic oils.
By naming these three raw materials, which perfumers use to create new odors, it is important to understand why the masters love to combine them all three.
Essential oils, natural oils and man-made aromatic oils: their essential characteristics
The supply of fragrances offered by different suppliers is extremely wide, so it is not surprising that it is easy to get lost in it in search of raw materials for candle production, home fragrances or other products. To help you decide what fragrances to choose, the MB "Gamtos dovanos" team defines the characteristics of essential oils, natural oils and man-made aromatic oils and provides other important aspects related to them.ESSENTIAL OILS These are compounds obtained directly from nature. The process of extracting essential oils takes a lot of time and requires a lot of careful work, so working with this raw material is quite expensive. To make it easier to imagine how it is done, think about the pressure of plants, such as lubricants or mint, until the appearance of natural fragrance oil. Essential oils are natural, often fragrant, highly concentrated vegetable extracts. They can be extracted from plant roots, leaves, stems, flowers or fruits using a process called distillation. It is also important to note that essential oils are strong and 100% natural.
IDENTICAL TO NATURAL ODORS. These fragrances, also called natural oils, are created by replicating the odors of essential oils using the same three (previously named) carbon, hydrogen and oxygen molecules as their natural analogs. Natural oils identical to natural odors are made from natural isolates, pulling them from essential oils, plants and flowers. This allows perfumers to use fragrances at a lower price, while maintaining a similar quality of fragrances.
It is useful to know that when natural isolates are used, it is possible to create odors that are not necessarily found in nature, but by adding together and tastefully combining the notes of natural isolates, it is possible to create complex, refined, distinctive aromas. This allows you to create a smell, the upper, middle and main notes of which are deeper than the essential oil. Using isolates, it can also be stated with certainty that the odor extracted is one hundred percent natural.NATURALLY EXTRACTED ODORS. Naturally extracted odors are produced from natural substances which are extracted (extraction means the separation of liquid mixtures (solutions) or mixtures of solids into components by solvent (extraction solvent)) using a diluent such as alcohol. In most standards, such odors are not considered to be one hundred percent natural, because they were contaminated with diluent substances.
MAN-MADE AROMATIC OILS. This is the third choice of fragrance ingredients. These fragrance compounds are created using different combinations of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen than identical analogs of their essential oils or natural oils. This gives perfumers creative flexibility by extracting specific isolated odors from a single compound and creating odors that cannot naturally be extracted, such as ocean wind. There are also certain flavorings that perfumes must create artificially because they can no longer be extracted from nature, such as musk, which was originally extracted from reindeer, whale and beaver reproductive organs. In the fragrance industry, there are many different materials from which fragrances are made. Each scent master uses 2,000-5,000 different raw materials in his creative palette each time creating a new, unique scent.
Odors are undoubtedly important in the production of candles, cosmetics and other products, and should therefore be chosen responsibly.
